#StopAbortionRx

In January 2023, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stripped away two decades of safety rules for the drug mifepristone, the Walgreens Corporation and CVS announced plans to begin selling it in their stores.

Also known as “the abortion pill,” this drug was approved for use in the year 2000 for the purpose of ending healthy intrauterine pregnancies — esssentially, to cause a miscarriage. The safety rules scrapped by the FDA had required dispensers to administer ultrasounds and blood tests at in person visits in order to prevent death and injury to pregnant people. Now, the door is open for neighborhood pharmacies to fill over-the-phone prescriptions.

In response, a coalition of pro-life activists, spurred on by our sister organization PAAU, launched the #StopAbortionRx protests. After a few weeks, Politico reported that Walgreens would not be selling mifeprostone in ”several states where abortion in general, and the medications specifically, remain legal.” This made our Governor, Gavin Newsom, very angry. Over Twitter, he threatened a boycott that would pull government contracts and millions of dollars away from Walgreens if they continued down that path.

NEWSOM FAILED

Then in April, the news came out that Newsom does not have the power to do this! According to California Healthline:

California is legally bound to continue doing business with Walgreens through the state’s massive Medicaid program, health law experts said…

Newsom spokesperson Anthony York said, “Tweeting is not policy.”

Walgreens has even been reinvited to apply for a specialty drug contract that Newsom pulled back on renewing last month, York said.

This means the only remaining boycott in California with the power to influence Walgreens belongs to the pro-life movement, and we need to own it! If you can’t make it to a #StopAbortionRx event in person, you can send a powerful message by transferring your presriptions and taking your business to these alternative pharmacies in San Francisco.
